COMBONI TECHNICAL SCHOOL (CTC) - LUNZU
Lunzu Youth Project was startedin 1993. The aim of Lunzu Youth project is to provide technical trainingand human formation to young Malawians.
The programmes and technical skills offered are carpentry and joinery,
welding and fabrication, electrical installations, general fitting and lastly
human formation.
Each program takes two years to complete.
Currently we have 113 students enrolled. The community at large sometimes ask
assistance for the construction of primary schools. We also help them in the
repairing of the village bore holes whenever the need arise.
The CTC is open to students of any faith, and they must pass a
written examination and oral interview. The school receives about 600
applications per year, but only has the capacity to accept less than 10% of the
applicants. About 90-95% of the students are male.
Recently, the CTC added a six-month internship program to assist its
students in getting “real world” experience after they graduate. They also
invite the top students back to work at the school to help in producing
furniture, doors, and other high quality goods for sale to help support the
school.
CHIKOWA YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTRE (CYDC)
Chikowa Youth Development Centre was started in
1987 as an informal training project to provide life skills in carpentry and
bricklaying to the school dropouts of Chikowa.
Over the years, the centre has grown into a formal technical school which
targets mainly youths who have completed their secondary school education. The
main objective of CYDC is to provide quality and affordable technical training
to the youth from low income earning families.
Currently the centre offers two years craft
certificate training in carpentry, bricklaying and agriculture.
CYDC has the advantage of being the only
catholic technical school in the Eastern Province and the only institution
which is able to integrate Christian Formation into skills training.
There
are also different production activities which offer job opportunities and
services to the local population. The production activities are: carpentry,
farming, animal husbandry, motor garage, grinding mill and tuck-shop.
